What about my kids? I asked him when did he think i need to get the surgery? All he said was lets wait until the results of the biopsies come back.
I know brendon and I will tell hunter when he gets older but it is just not the same. I wanted him to have many years with her. At least brendon spent time with her and had special days with her. Hunter did not have many at all. we do have the trip to Disney that we all went on last summer, thank god. But that is all just pictures.

I know she is better off. I also know it will never get easier, but I also know she is in a better place and is not is any pain and that is what I want for her if she can not be here.

My experience with a child who was born with a 90% hearing loss.

I remember a little over a year ago when the nurse came into the hospital room and told me my son was referred for the hearing test and they would have to do another test before he left. i was not worried at first. i had a terrible delivery and my pediatrician told me he probably had a lot of junk in his ears an not to worry. well the day i left he failed again so now we had to schedule a test where he had to be asleep. after 3 tests (Aug 2007)it was finally confirmed he had a 90% hearing loss. so basically he was deaf. Jason was not with me and now I had to tell him the news i had just gotten. I was devastated but also happy that that was all that was wrong with him. the audiologist that told me was so sweet. she told me all of my option and who i can get help from. She did mention cochlear implants. I was not familiar with it so of course i asked a lot of questions.
The first thing i did was tell my husband. he did not understand. I tried to explain it to him the best i could. I also reminded him that a lot of the children have more than just a hearing loss. the could have MS, could be blind, Learning disables, etc.... He finally understood and we talked about our options. Of course the first thing i did was got on the computer and searched about hearing loss and cochlear Implants to make myself more aware of what we were going to have to deal with from then until whenever.

Cochlear implants have electrodes that replace the cilia (small hairs in the cochlear) that is in your cochlear(the shell looking part in your ear) It is amazing. I was so intrigued by it. I could not stop looking up information on cochlear implants.

In September of 2007 He was set up with Early Intervention (EI) and they got the ball moving on his speech therapy, physical therapy, and hearing aids. I was great how much they helped. not soon after that we started looking for surgeons to to the Cochlear Implant surgery. We asked around. I asked my friends that were in the medical field and the finger got pointed to Dr. Roland. He was one of the first surgeons to perform the surgery. I was sold.

In Nov, I made appointments for his pre - surgery testing which was intense. There were 3 evaluations, one visit with Dr. Shapiro (helped us decide what implant we wanted and why), a CAT Scan of hunters ear and brain, and the the final evaluation in the middle of Dec. with Dr. Roland.

Hunter was a perfect candidate for Cochlear implants and we had scheduled his surgery for February 2008. At this time my mother had just passed away about a month before and now we were doing one of the best things for our son. We were giving him the opportunity to hear. My mother would have been so happy. I know she as with me through the whole process.

Well February comes, Hunter has the surgery about 4 weeks later he gets activated. OMG I can not even explain what it was like. He heard. He was able to hear noises, loud and soft. It was amazing. I have never been so happy yet so sad (because my mom was not there to see it) at the same time.

Now hunter is 15 months old and responding all the time to noise. He is an amazing little boy. He surprises me everyday. he gets speech therapy 3 times a week and gets his implants tested about every 3 months. Last week, July 1 he had his 1st booth evaluation and was tested at hearing at 15 decibels and that is almost if not better then a normal hearing person.

Hunter received tubes in his ears today. This is because he has had many ear infections since his implants and if he gets too many and did not get the tubes put in he has a higher risk if getting meningitis. So of course like every other decision we have made, this is the best for him so of course it will be done.

This is where we are today. I know it was a lot but i feel better letting it out. I know that this will always be here for me.
